History of Bandwidth in BVSD
Less than a year ago we had only a 700Mbps connection from the internet. Last April 2014 we increased that capacity to 1Gbps because we were bumping up against that ceiling. And now, just 8 months later, we approach our new 1Gbps ceiling limit frequently.
Unfortunately, it’s not as easy as calling our Internet Service Provider (ISP) and telling them to give us more bandwidth; we have to upgrade the equipment and software that runs our network, and that is a big project.
With resources made available from the bond, we will be purchasing new equipment through a Request for Proposal (RFP) process, which is currently underway. Our purchase will go to the Board for approval in mid-April, and after that we can start work. The installation will begin after the school year ends, with a target date for completion of July 20, 2015.
What this means at the end of the day?
By the start of the 2015-16 school year we will have double or even quadruple the internet bandwidth we have today. Increasing our bandwidth will greatly improve the educational and learning environment. It will ease the stress we currently feel during testing and assessments, and it will allow us to re-enable access to streaming resources, such as Pandora and Spotify.
